Why we use the Bowen Technique

  • Bowen Technique is well-known for its use in Sport injuries and frozen shoulder, and is a wonderful calming treatment for back pain, stiff neck and knee pain.
  • It is safe and effective in emergency treatments, for people of all ages, in all states of health.
  • Bowen is particularly useful for shoulder problems, neck strain, jaw tension, asthmatic tensions, anxiety, muscle cramps, muscle strains, sprains, knee pain, RSI in hands and wrists.
  • It assists in pelvic correction, by balancing the tensions of muscles around the complex joints involved. Hip pain is usually helped in this way, as well as tightness in the low back.

Bowen in Spinal & Cranial Therapy

We learned with Julian Baker, the first authorised teacher in Britain, and with his teacher, Oswald Rentsch - one of the handful of Australian osteopaths whom Tom Bowen "apprenticed" to pass on his technique. Ossie & Elaine Rentsch are Directors of The Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia.

A principle of Bowen Technique is that "less is more", and our treatment may be likened to setting a ball rolling in the right direction. This Technique gives us a means to feel the story of the muscles and fascia (connective tissue), deepening our understanding of the underlying causes.

The Bowen Technique is well suited to working with our youngest and oldest patients (especially those with osteoporosis) so we have developed our technique to combine it with Craniosacral muscle techniques.

Bowen Technique is unique

The Bowen Technique is a dynamic system of muscle and connective tissue therapy that was developed by the late Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia. Sometimes called the homeopathy of bodywork, it uses a series of "moves" across muscles to release fascial attachments, stimulating profound changes in the body which develop over several days.

The Bowen Technique can provide relief for many types of injuries and other health problems, both acute and chronic. The practitioner's moves deliver signals to the nervous system at specific locations (on muscles, tendons, ligaments, or nerves), and the body responds in its own time, within its vital capacity.

Rather than focusing on a single complaint, Bowen Technique addresses the entire body, restoring balance via the autonomic nervous system, which controls over 80% of bodily functions and is very susceptible to stress.
